Looking for Middle Eastern fare in Milano? As crazy as it may sound, there isn’t a ton of options when it comes to a place to enjoy a good kebab and some falafel, so imagine my glee and joy when I found out about Nun. Opened back in 2014 right behind Porta Venezia – one of my favorite neighborhoods when it comes to ethnic restaurants – Nun is the love child of 8 friends who had decided that it was time for Milano to have its own delicious place to enjoy Middle Eastern food. And I can’t tell you how glad I am they did!
The atmosphere is definitely informal, with bright custom made posters, white walls, and large windows. Airy and cheerful, the dining room is simple but pretty and the large communal table is perfect for those who are eating alone; otherwise, there are also some smaller tables, ideal for small groups.
One of the best aspects about dining at Nun is that you literally get to build your own menu, which is not only fun, but is also a guarantee that you’ll end up with exactly what you want. First, you pick what kind of bread you want: there’s a traditional arab flat bread, which is similar to what I have found in Istanbul , or several wrap-style tortillas -Arabic, olive oil, spelt or whole wheat. Then you choose what you want the main protagonist to be: there is chicken kebab (made with 100% Italian chicken), homemade falafel, fried eggplants, fried halloumi or a combination of any of the above. It’s now time to pick sauces and fillings, and here you can truly customize your sandwich, as there are so many to chose from. While I’m not a fan of white sauce, I love spicy harissa, which in my opinion goes particularly well with hummus. Other fillings include baba ganoush, fried onions, olives, lettuce, tomatoes and much, much more; if choosing ain’t your thing, you can pick one of the suggested combinations: from the classic kebab (4,90€) to a vegan delight (5,90€).
I started my meal with falafel (3€), probably the best I’ve eaten outside of the Middle East: spiced to perfection, cooked just right, chewy and light, it’s a real winner – so good in fact, you might want to eat it without any sauce. The sauces, however, are delicious as well: tahina has a wonderful smokiness to it, while harissa adds a nice spicy tang to the falafel.
My sandwich was gigantic, and exactly everything I had dreamt of: filled with succulent fried eggplant, hummus, boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs and Israeli salad it was the perfect combination of flavors and textures. Rich and tasty, it truly hit the spot and left me incredibly satisfied.
Service is friendly, fast and informal: you order your food at the counter, give your name to the cashier and take a seat; when your food is ready they will call your name and you can pick it up. All in all, it’s the perfect way to keep the atmosphere low key and relaxed – just what you need to savor the delicious Middle Eastern fare Nun serves.
